Geostructural Foam


Cellofoam manufactures Geostructural expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam to stringent specifications to handle the structural loads imparted by its design environment in construction applications. This is strongly differentiated from normal EPS and its typical, non-structural use as building insulation. With a density of only approximately 1% of traditional earth fills, Geostructural Foam serves as lightweight void fill or pressure absorbing medium, carefully designed to carry specific static and dynamic structural loads. Cellofoam manufactures two distinct types of EPS Geostructural Foam, Geofoam and Elastic Inclusion.

Geofoam


Geofoam has been in use as a geosynthetic product for lightweight, structural, void fill for nearly five decades. Blocks of EPS Geofoam are generally placed in the ground in construction projects to reduce the loads imposed on adjacent and underlying soils and structures. Geofoam is extremely light weight, has moderate rigidity, and the quick and easy placement of the blocks provide significant advantages over traditional fills. Cellofoam produces Geofoam in a wide range of sizes and compressive strength grades, which are selected by the designer for a specific application. Expanding from its traditional use in road and bridge construction, Geofoam applications in the United States have more recently broadened to cinema seating, landscaping, green roofing, and hotel roof-top pool decks.  All of Cellofoam Geofoam EPS is manufactured in strict compliance with ASTM D6817, Standard Specification for Rigid Cellular Polystyrene Geofoam. Elastic Inclusion


Cellofoam Elastic Inclusion is composed of expanded polystyrene that is molded, aged, and pre-stressed for construction projects that require an energy absorbing capability to handle dynamic surcharge loads such as those imparted by traffic or ground movements from earthquakes. This compressible inclusion is formed from EPS block that has been strained beyond the yield point and then unloaded to elasticize the foam and provide specific compressive resistance in the prestress direction.  Due to its unique energy absorbing property, Elastic Inclusions are ideal for protective applications for culverts and buried pipes, tunnels, bermed structures, retaining walls, and bridge abutments.  In particular, Cellofoam Elastic Inclusion EPS is well-suited for use on bridge backwalls and wingwalls, where large earth pressures and excessive settlement of approach embankments from cyclical, thermal expansions of the superstructure are a concern.  Elastic Inclusion material has also served to lower net construction costs by reducing the amount of more expensive materials used, such as concrete and steel.  While Cellofoam Elastic Inclusion EPS is usually used in new construction, it may also be employed to cost effectively rehabilitate or retrofit existing structures to increase design life or design safety factor.
