EPS Geofoam Applications: Slope Stabilization
As a lightweight durable material, Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) Geofoam is used by construction professionals around the globe for all manner of road and bridge construction purposes. One area that it really excels in is the stabilization of slopes. Unstable slopes can be costly, both in monetary and time perspectives.
How It Works
Using it stabilizes slopes by removing a portion of the existing soil and replacing it with our Expanded Polystyrene Geofoam solution. This unloads the head (or top) of the landslide and improves its stability. No special equipment needed. Using it is safer than soil not only because it is much lighter, but also because it isn’t affected by temperature cycling.
Using the method above, you may be able to avoid excavating and replacing the entire slide mass to achieve the optimum factor of safety against future sliding, leading to significant savings. The highly versatile material can be used in both soil slopes and rock slopes.
The Benefits
Geofoam Research Center reports that the benefits of using it in slope stabilization include reduced maintenance and labor for the overall project, less traffic impact, cleaner construction, and maximized available right-of-way. It’s resistant to mold and mildew, as well. Minimized traffic impact makes a huge difference in congested areas, and cleaner construction is a must around waterways.
